How is your handicap actually calculated? Enter your rounds and see the math โ step by step.
The World Handicap System (WHS) calculates your Handicap Index using a specific formula that most golfers never see. Here's what's actually happening behind the scenes: for each round you play, the system calculates a "differential" โ a number that represents how you performed relative to the course difficulty.
The differential formula is: (Score โ Course Rating) ร 113 รท Slope Rating. The 113 is the standard slope โ it normalizes all courses to a common scale so a round at a hard course and an easy course can be fairly compared. Once you have differentials for your last 20 rounds, the system takes the best 8, averages them, and multiplies by 0.96 (a "bonus for excellence" factor).
Understanding this math reveals important insights: your handicap is based on your BEST rounds, not your average. A golfer who shoots between 85-90 consistently will have a lower handicap than one who alternates between 80 and 100 โ even though their averages might be identical. Consistency matters more than occasional brilliance.
This calculator shows every step of the process transparently, so you can see exactly which rounds are counting toward your handicap and which aren't. Try the What-If Simulator to see how dropping your worst rounds would change your index.
