Are golf lessons actually worth the money? Here's the math — with your numbers.
The short answer: for most golfers, yes — if you play regularly. Research shows that a single lesson with a qualified instructor improves the average golfer's handicap by 0.3-0.7 strokes, with diminishing returns at lower handicaps. A series of 5 lessons can produce a 2-3 stroke improvement for a 15-25 handicapper.
The ROI framing is useful: if you play 30 rounds a year and lessons improve your score by 3 strokes per round, that's 90 strokes saved annually. If your average round costs $50 in green fees, and you value each stroke as roughly 1% of your round cost (since lower scores = more enjoyment), the value adds up quickly.
The highest ROI comes from lessons at higher handicaps (15+), where fundamental fixes produce large improvements. Below a 10 handicap, improvements are smaller and more incremental — but the golfer also tends to value each marginal stroke more.
