Train your swing to the same 3:1 tempo ratio as Tour pros. Visual + audio.
Research from John Novosel's "Tour Tempo" revealed that virtually all PGA Tour players โ regardless of swing speed โ maintain a consistent 3:1 ratio between their backswing and downswing. Three beats back, one beat through. This ratio holds for Fred Couples' silky swing and Tiger Woods' powerful one.
Most amateurs rush their downswing, creating a ratio closer to 1:1 or 2:1. This produces inconsistent contact, poor sequencing, and loss of power. Training with a metronome ingrains the correct ratio into muscle memory.
The total swing speed (BPM) varies by player. Slower swingers might use a 72 BPM total tempo (18 frames backswing, 6 frames downswing at 24fps). Faster swingers run at 108 BPM (27/9). But the 3:1 ratio stays constant.
Use this metronome during practice sessions. Start with chip shots at the slow setting, then work up to full swings. Find an instructor who teaches tempo and sequencing for the fastest path to consistency.
