Are you playing the wrong shaft? Most golfers are. Enter your swing speed and find out.
Shaft flex is one of the most misunderstood equipment variables in golf. Playing the wrong flex costs you distance, accuracy, and consistency โ and most golfers are playing shafts that are too stiff for their swing speed.
A shaft that's too stiff for your swing doesn't bend enough on the downswing, resulting in an open clubface at impact (producing a push or slice), lower launch angle, and less distance. A shaft that's too flexible does the opposite: it bends too much, closing the face and producing hooks with excessive spin.
The right flex allows the shaft to load and unload in sync with your swing, delivering the clubface square to the ball with optimal launch conditions. Swing speed is the primary factor, but tempo matters too โ a smooth swinger at 95 mph needs a different shaft than an aggressive swinger at the same speed.
This tool gives you a starting point based on your swing speed and tempo. For a precise recommendation, get a professional club fitting โ but going in knowing your approximate flex range helps you make better decisions. Find an instructor who does fittings.
